In his letter, Baldwin talks about the Negro community of America at times terming them as ignorant and also innocent to the actions of the white American society. Sociology, Germov and Smith Introduction We often think of theory as somehow divorced from reality, but we actually make use of theories every day of our lives (Germov 2009, p. 25). In this assignment I will examine two theoretical perspectives. I will then discuss their similarities and differences in their approach to studying health and illness. I then aim to discover which perspective has greater contemporary relevance in todays society. The two theoretical perspectives I have chosen to investigate a structural functionalism and symbolic interactionism. I chose these two perspectives as I am interested in finding more information about them both, I would like to discover more information about how they relate to health and what perspective is has more relevance today. According to Germov (2009, pp. 26) A theory is an explanation of how things work and why things happen. They allow us to make sense of our world by showing us how certain facts are connected to one another to show us the answers to the how and why questions of life (Germov 2009, p. 26). Germov (2009, pp. 26) states: A theory attempts to simplify reality and generalise its common and related features relevant to the topic at hand. The sheer variety of social life and the diversity of human behaviour mean that there is no single sociological theory of everything. Many social theories have been developed over the years. There are seven main theoretical perspectives including structural functionalism, Marxism, Weberianism, symbolic interaction, feminism, contemporary modernism and post-structure/postmodernism (Germov 2009, p. 27). However I have chosen to only investigate two of these theories, functionalism and symbolic interactionism. Functionalism is the oldest and dominant theoretical perspective in sociology (McClelland, 2000). The key theorists for this perspective are Emile Durkeim and Robert Merton (Germov 2009, p. 27). Emile Durkheimis considered to be the father of sociology. He is credited with making sociology a science, and having made it part of the French academic curriculum as Science Sociale. Emile Durkheim gave many lectures, and published an impressive number of sociological studies during his lifetime. His lectures and studies were on subjects such as religion, suicide, and all aspects of society (emile-durkheim.com 2002). This perspective is built upon twin emphases: application of the scientific method to the objective social world and use of an analogy between the individual organism and society (McClelland, 2000). It studies the way social structures function to maintain stability and social order (Germov 2009, p. 27). Summary Structural-functionalism is a consensus theory, meaning that it sees society as built upon order, interrelation, and balance among parts as a means of maintaining the smooth functioning of the whole. Structural-Functionalism views shared standards and values as the basis of society, focuses on social order based on unspoken agreements between groups, and views social change as occurring in a slow and orderly fashion (Unc.edu 2004). Functionalists accept that change is sometimes necessary to correct social dysfunctions, but that it must occur slowly so that people and institutions can adapt without confusion (Unc.edu 2004). Structural Functionalism has made a number of main assumptions which focus on several levels of analysis society, community, individual and social unit. The assumptions include that societies and social units such as families and organisations are held together by orderliness and cooperation, societies work best when they function smoothly as an organism and that the system may be static or involved in an ordered process of change. Another assumption made by structural functionalism is that the nature of one part of the system has an impact on the form that the other parts can take. Also those external environments adapt to each other and more (Unc.edu 2004). Functionalism focuses on the MACRO level, meaning it looks at large-scale social institutions like society compared to looking at international networks such as the government. Structural functionalism pays little attention to individual agency and personality development. The functionalist analysis of health care has been mainly influenced by Talcott Parsons. He viewed the health of individuals as a necessary condition of a stable and ordered society. He conceived illness as a form of deviance meaning he viewed it as stopping people from carrying out various social roles which were essential to the functioning in society (Germov 2009, p. 30). In other words, when you are sick you are not being a productive member of society. The general idea is that the individual who has fallen ill is not only physically sick, but now adheres to the social role of being sick. The pathway to health was achieved through the sick role. Being Sick is not just a state of fact or condition, it contains customary rights and obligations based on the social norms that surround it. The theory outlined two rights of a sick person, the sick person is exempt from normal social roles and the sick person is not responsible for their condition. The obligations are that the sick person should try to get well and that the sick person should seek technically competent help and cooperate with the medical professional (Millon, Blaney Davis 1999, p. 446). An example of this is that students often have to supply a medical certificate to support their case for not performing their students roles of not turning up to class or submitting work on time. Symbolic interactionism is one of the major theoretical perspectives in sociology. This perspective has a long intellectual history, beginning with the German sociologist and economist, Max Weber and the American philosopher, George H. Mead, both of whom emphasised the subjective meaning of human behaviour, the social process, and pragmatism (McClelland 2000). According to Smith (2001): Max Weber was born in 1864 and looked at sociology in terms of it being an extensive science of social action and in the beginning he would only focus on specific social contexts. Somewhat in contrast to this belief, he later believed that one of the most distinguishing characteristics of a society is their change or shift in motivation that is caused by structural or historical forces. Symbolic interactionists focus on agency and how people construct, give meaning and interpret their behaviour through interaction with others (Germov 2009, p. 33). The main assumption is that humans create reality through their actions and the meanings they give to them. Therefore, society is the cumulative effect of human action, interaction, and interpretation, and these are more significant that social structures, hence the focus of the perspective (Germov 2009, p. 33). For interactionists, humans are pragmatic actors who continually must adjust their behaviour to the actions of other individuals. We can adjust to these actions only because we are able to interpret them. Germov (2009, p. 33) states: Symbolic interationism provides a theoretical bridge between sociology and psychology by concentrating on a small-scale interaction and how this impacts on individuals identity or image of themselves. An example of the quote above is when someone is to receive a compliment regularly such as you are attractive and intelligent the reaction can impact on what you believe and how you behave. In contrast to functionalism which focuses on the MACRO level, symbolic interationism focuses on the MICRO theories meaning it looks more on individuals and their everyday interactions with others and small-scale social groups and organisations (Unc.edu 2004). Symbolic interactionism emphasises that health and illness are social constructions that vary over time and change between cultures. Meaning that what is considered an illness is socially defined and passes through a social lens that reflects the culture, politics, and morality of a particular society and a certain point in time (Germov 2009, p. 33). Therefore an illness in one culture may be considered a wellness in another culture. Also now in the 21st century a plump woman would be considered healthy where as a thin woman would most likely be seen as unhealthy (Anderson Taylor, p. 540). Both functionalism and symbolic interactionism are sociological theories. There are a wide variety of sociological theories which can be grouped together according to various criteria. One of the most important of these is the distinction between structural or macro perspectives and social action or micro perspectives. These perspectives are different as they approach the analysis of society in different measures. Functionalism is an example of a macro perspective because it analyses the way society as a whole fits together whereas symbolic interactionism is a micro perspective as it stresses the meaningfulness of human behaviour and denies that it is primarily determined by the structure of society (Langhoff 2002). I believe that the perspective with the most contemporary relevance is structural functionalism. Parsons views are correct in saying that the health of individuals is a necessary condition of a stable and ordered society. The sick role ask people to supply evidence when not being able to perform their normal social role. This has contemporary relevance as for example, in todays society if people are unable to work they are to supply a doctors certificate to prove they were deemed unfit to work and contribute to society. This is because as according to Parsons, illness disrupts the normal functioning of society; therefore it is important that the sick are encouraged to seek expert help so that they can return to performing their social role (Germov 2009, p. 30). Conclusion Furthermore, functionalism has contemporary relevance because of the rights and obligations stated before are true when discussing society today. If people are sick they are exempt from normal social roles and they are usually not responsible for their condition. The obligations are also true as when sick, it is looked upon that if the sick person is unable to perform their social role they should try to get well and that the sick person should seek expert help and cooperate with the medical professional. After investigating the theories of functionalism and symbolic interactionism it is clear that functionalism has more contemporary relevance in society today. However over time social theories change as society itself changes and new knowledge, ideas and capabilities emerge (Germov 2009, p. 39). Bessants and Watts 1999 study (cited in Germov 2009, p. 38) state that sociologists constantly hover between and in and out of different traditions, and specific social theories are not as neat or coherence as grouping then into theoretical perspectives implies. This meaning that sociologists tend to include a range of perspectives into a specific theory. This essay has focused on sex and gender and the nature vs. nurture concept and in doing so as assessed Freuds notion of anatomy is destiny. After gaining an understanding of the concepts associated with the nature vs. nurture concept it can be suggested through research that there is no evidence to prove that one concept is of greater significance to the development of a child. In saying this it can be concluded that Freuds notion of anatomy is destiny is still relevant today in society, however is not the underlying factor that contributes to the development of a child. It can now be suggested that although the nature theory is always going to contribute to the development of a child, more research is suggesting and offering evidence to believe that the nurture theory contributes significantly to the development of a child.

Rescue Me St. John Ambulance Team In school periods, students can join sports, news editing, cheerleading teams, and other academia groups. My alma mater was Chong Hwa High School, which was a little different from other schools because it didn’t have its own medical support, so medical care was provided by St. John ambulance team. Participating in this ambulance team was my gleeful period when I was a high school student. Still, I clearly remember the reasons for joining St. John Ambulance, being a team member and a captain. There were several reasons why I joined this ambulance team.First, when I was about 10 years old, I saw a motorcycle accident. It was a broiling day. I was trudging on the way of home and felt wobbly. Abruptly, a flying vehicle passed in front of me and boomed. An elderly rider fell in front of me. He was looking at me with eyes seeking help and stretching out his hand. His blood was flowing out ceaselessly. I was anxious and looked around of me. There wa s nobody except me. I felt helpless and sad because the only thing I could do was calling for an ambulance. However, the elder man died before the ambulance team arrived.The ground was dyed red by his blood. I couldn’t forget this event until now and blamed myself. If I could have done something for this rider, maybe I could have saved his life; also, those medical skills might have been a help for my future. Conversely, St. John ambulance team was a well developed international organization. St John ambulance team was founded in United Kingdom in 1877; also, it expanded to other countries with the colonization by the United Kingdom. There is a great number of branches of St. John ambulance teams on the world; moreover, I could use its medical license everywhere.For instance, I had a CPR license,which could provide me with legal support when I rescued a patient. If the patient died during my assistance, I would not get sued by the patient’s family. Being an ambulance t eam member was a very excellent experience for me, and I learned various lessons from camping trips and different services. My first camping trip was a freshman trip. I was very excited about it. On this trip, I learned about St. John principles. The principles were eight words: tact, resource, observation, dexterity, explicitness, sympathy, discrimination and perseverance.If we could achieve those principal eight words, we could be an efficient ambulance team member. For instance, we had a Furthermore, I comprehended how important teamwork was. During the camping trip, we needed to find a partner to work with; such as brushing each other’s teeth, practicing medical skills. Survival camping was another lesson which inspired me a lot. On this trip, we learned about outdoor survival skills. Those skills helped me to improve my medical skills. For example, what would you do when you got bitten by a snake. First, you needed to wash the injury with clean water.Second, you used a s terilized knife to cut a cross on the injury, and pushed the poisoned blood out. Furthermore, first aid services were extremely helpful experiences for me because I could attend to injured people on the first scene of accidents. My most unforgettable memory was when I needed to search an arm of a young guy at an accident scene. This event was on highway, and the driver’s arm was cut off by being crushed by a truck. I was ordered to find his arm; then, I found it on other side of the highway. The severed part of the arm was extraordinarily terrifying.The bone was exposed; also, I saw a little blood dropping from the mashed flesh. When I picked up the arm, I was terrified and wanted to vomit. The tactility and odor of the arm was disgusting. I couldn’t have a meal and sleep in that day; still, I was tortured by this nightmare for a week and woke up miserable with every morning. When I was a senior student, I passed the test of the ambulance team and became a captain. Bei ng a captain of a medical team was not easy for me because I did’t have experience to manage a team. My first problem was training my team. All captain needed to train their teams by themselves.I didn’t have much teaching experience; as a result, my team was a disaster. My team couldn’t follow my directions and always ruined our practices. In one time, we had a rescue rehearsal; my term was supposed to carry invalids to a safe place; nonetheless, they dragged those patients instead. As a result, our practice were failed. On the other hand, I understood that â€Å"Great power comes with great responsibilities. † I had power to manage my team members, but I also needed to take responsibility when they made mistakes. In a medical team, mistakes were huge issues because our mistakes ould exacerbate our patients’ conditions. One time, my team member used the wrong medication for a student. This student asked this member to treat his scalded. My member w as supposed to use a medication for burns; however, he used another instead . The wrong medication caused the scalded injury to worsen. This student’s skin color turned from red to dark purple. ; therefore, he needed to go to clinic. After that, this student’s parent complained to the school; consequently, I needed to apologize to this student’s parent and wrote a report to explain this incident.This incident was an awful experience for me. This indignant parent stood in front of me and screamed on my face. I was bashful and needed to smile to this parent. After this parent lift, I still had to explain this incident to headmaster, and it was the first time I saw incensed headmaster. Indeed, St. John Ambulance team influenced me a lot. I learned the value of life and medical skills; also, I got some medical licenses, which could be advantages for looking for a job in the future. When I saw those smiles of patients when they met with their family again, I felt the satisfaction of helping people.Also, there are many unexpected accidents everywhere. Learning these medical skills can help me to provide some cure to injured people or perhaps even my family in the future. However, the most important thing was trying and experiencing different things. During school life, most people are afraid to try new things, such as joining a unfamiliar groups, meeting some new friends, or other. I strongly recommend people to try new things because they may learn or experience useful knowledge for their futures. Aiding others is the perfect medicine and remedy for one’s soul. The greater the help the greater the dosage.

The narrator understood that the Thiefs widow required Ramani to undergo this operation for her hand in marriage. Her five brats seems too large, vulgar a number of seemingly unloved children taken care of by one widow of vile nature. If one stretches ones imagination perhaps Salman Rushdie is suggesting to be wary of women, depicting the dire consequences that foolish men face , just as Ramani had to face nasbandi because of his limited perspective , only looking at what he had to gain the hand of the thiefs widow where on hindsight he lost not only his manhood but much of his sanity as he deceived himself with the new fantasy of the free radio, and with that , a humiliating act which Ramani put up publicly which simply ended in further misery with the realisation that there was no radio. The free radio is a perfect symbol of delusion and self deception, the ability to think clearly is instrumental to separating humans from lower forms of animals, a failure in our system however is demonstrated in Ramani where he adjusts his thinking so much that he deceives himself for almost a year His young body was being poured into that space between his ear and his hand by a mighty and impossible act of will. Once he receives his radio everything would be made worth while. However one does not dispute Ramanis happiness during that year when his rare quality of total belief in his dreams allowed him to lead a happy life- A happiness which could not be explained by the supposed imminence of the transistor However in the end, this further humiliation contributed to his decision to leave the village. It is also interesting to note that with his departure, he follows his original true dream and ambition of being a bollywood star in the city and how this dream is juxtaposed against the pseudo fantasy of the free radio, however this bollywood star ambition can also be interpreted as comparable to the free radio , a further assault on the inability Ramani has to embrace reality and deal with failure. I remember the huge mad energy which he had poured into the act of conjuring reality. From the delusional effects the free radio has and noting the context at the time we can infer that the free radio has been used as a tool to criticize the Government , as mentioned earlier the white caravan and nasbandi, family planning was genuine and was going around India at the time that Rushdie wrote the story, the encouragement of men to give up their manhood in national interest, granting free radios in appreciation, often times these were empty promises of politicians vying for power. Through the use of this policy and the free radio, Rushdie demonstrates the utter humiliation and suffering these men have to endure after sacrificing their manhood in national interest, Rushdie allows readers to see the incompatibility of the free radio as compensation for an operation so humiliating and daunting as nasbandi. Through Rushdies use of diction and utilisation of an elderly narrator, readers feel disappointed as men like Ramani seemed to have been hoodwinked, deceived into taking part in something they did not want to and had little idea of the consequences of their actions. Another point to suggest a criticism of politics and the government are the semi political armband youths who flatter Ramani initially but eventually show their true self Ram was frogmarched out by his drinking-chums Ram is seen to foolishly trust and believe in these men who filled his head with dreams and in the end, just as he is with the free radio symbolising the government, he is forsaken, betrayed. Salman Rushdie also suggests that now, nobody adheres to advice from the elderly. This is seen in the beginning But who listens to the wisdom of the old today? The choice of utilising Teacher Sahib as the narrator is key to us seeing his perspectives and how if only Ramani listened to teacher Sahib -the elderly, everything would be fine as he slowly gained in stature and wisdom. Even the name of the narrator teacher Sahib suggests that he knows more and is a respectable figure. The free radio acts as a catalyst for his spite for the thiefs widow and we see all his negative feelings towards her and works as a base for readers poor first impression of the thiefs widow, but more importantly the radio, symbolically negative allows readers to see the true care and concern teacher Sahib has for Ramani as only he is against the free radio and its terrible nature. This further encourages readers to trust and believe in teacher Sahib and understand the message being suggested that respecting and listening to the generally wise and experienced elderly is the correct path to safety. Also towards the end of the story Maybe the views of the old can be discounted now, and if thats so , let it be. This martyr like sentence garners pity and sympathy readers have towards teacher Sahib who although tried his best could not save the foolish Ramani who refused to listen and heed warnings from him. This again emphasises the point of respecting the elderly. In conclusion, the free radio may seem simplistic in the story, a mere gift from the Government, but in reality it has been developed extensively . Through diction , sentence structure , and most importantly the use of the free radio as a symbol in moving the plot along , the free radio not only represents the delusional sentiments of Ramani , the wickedness of the widow but these symbols it takes on of escapism , achievement and loss , restriction of sex , delusion , deception all work together to emphasise the authors messages of importance of being realistic , wary of the consequences of ones actions, negligence of the opinions of the aged and most importantly the criticism of the government.
